The key management is vital for wireless sensor network security. Design of reasonable, safe, efficient key management schemes and protocols can provide secure and reliable communication. Key management in wireless sensor networks meets many new challenges due to its intrinsic characteristics such as limited capacity of energy, processing power, storage and communication. The primary design objective is to provide high-quality and efficient use of bandwidth in traditional wireless network while the design first is to consider efficient use of energy in sensor network which is one of the most important distinction. Therefore, research on lightweight key management scheme is the point for WSN.In this paper, the taxonomy for key management schemes and protocols is proposed, the classic key management schemes and protocols are discussed and compared in detail, and then a novel mutual learning neural network based key agreement protocol is proposed which is lower consuming as for computation and communication. With analysis of the TinySec protocol without key update mechanism the scheme is used to update the key file content for TinySec running nodes, which can improve the TinySec security level. For cluster-based wireless sensor networks, the paper put forward another lightweight key update mechanism. In cluster heads network, they use TinyTPM protocol to achieve key agreement and update security. In each cluster, the cluster head responses for the distribution of new key to nodes by logic tree. The final assessment of security is given.
