With the rapid development of the mobile communications, higher and higher demand for the channel capacity, bandwidth, and the quality of the communication system are needed. However, Multiple-Input and Multiple-Out(namely MIMO ) technology is one of those key technologies which can meet above these requirements, and it is also the kind of technology that will be researched significantly in the future high-speed mobile broadband communications system, so it has a broad prospects of application. In the above context, this paper discusses the issues of MIMO channel modeling, the purpose is to study how to establish an effective channel model to ensure the requirements for the high capacity and high spectral efficiency. The main contents of this paper are as followed:First, the development of the broadband wireless channel model is presented, Two kinds of wireless channel fading (large-scale fading and small-scale fading) and their typical channel models are analyzed in detail. Above all, small-scale fading is discussed significantly.Secondly, an overview of the basic theoretical knowledge for broadband MIMO wireless channel modeling is presented, which includes the key channel parameters, the evolution of the MIMO wireless channel, the classification of modeling methods, typical spatial channel model and the spatial correlation. Among them, the spatial correlation of the MIMO channel is focused on, which refers to the definition of correlation and the calculation of correlation coefficients. Finally, based on the above research, the I-METRA MIMO channel based on the correlation matrix is studied carefully, including how to design a broadband MIMO channel model with multi-tap base on statistical channel model, how to generate correlation coefficient. In this paper, the improvement is to add the control of the antenna array to the gained broadband MIMO channel model. In the respect of the simulation, detailed ideas of simulation and simulation processes are presented, and the simulation based on the specific parameters of Case B in 3GPP standard. Over simulation, the improvement is that the LOS propagation component is added to the first path. Compared with the theoretical values, the simulation results are basically consistent, which validates the correctness of the established channel model.
