Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a multi-hop and self-organized network, with low power consumption, low cost, distributed characteristics, it collaborate perception and processing the information of network coverage area using a large number of nodes. At present, there are three reliability mechanisms that guarantee the data transmission in the WSN, they are forward error correction code (FEC), automatic retransmission (ARQ) and multipath transmission. These three mechanisms all improve the reliability of WSN by increasing data redundancy, which makes them brought different rate of transmission energy consumption cost. Because the codes energy in WSN is limited, and the codes integrated perception, control, wireless communications and other functions, so establishing effective reliability security mechanism in WSN is a problem that is worth studying. The proposing of network coding breaks the traditional routing mode which is just responsible for receiving and forwarding information. It allows the nodes to encode the entered information before forwarding it, and then send out the coded messages. The receiving nodes decode the coded messages to get the native messages according to some encoding information. The researches show that network coding can improve the network throughput, balance network load, reduce node energy consumption and transmission delay, increase network fault tolerance and robustness and improve information security. The characteristics of wireless sensor network determine that it is very suitable to use network coding techniques. This paper studies the reliability of the protection mechanism in WSN, and their respective characteristics. Then we discuss the encoding of network coding, particularly, the random linear network coding. The focus of this paper is the performance comparisons between the reliability of the protection mechanism based on network coding for wireless sensor network and the traditional reliability of the mechanism of the protection mechanism, such as the network performance of single path transmission and multipath transmission which based on network coding. A new ARQ transmission mechanism is proposed which combining network coding and ARQ. ReInForm is one of the reliable routing protocols for WSN, a reliable routing based on network coding NC-ReInForm is proposed on the basis of analysis and improvement of ReInForm. Carrying out a detail analysis and presentation of the NC-ReInForm's message format and protocol processes as well as its reliability. The results showed that when meeting certain reliability requirements, the NC-ReInForm routing can significantly reduce the multipath number and reduce energy consumption.
