IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem),a new multimedia communication network architecture, can satisfy the customer's needs for more novel and diversified multimedia services and is a kind of next generation communication network control structure in line with the development direction of network convergence. With the arrival of the era of full-services operation, fixed and mobile convergence (FMC) is an inevitable requirement in both the network level and the service level. Following the evolution of mobile core network towards NGN, FMC will be further promoted and finally leads to the IMS framework providing multimedia services. IMS is considered to be the core technology of NGN and serves as an important approach to FMC and the introduction of triple play communication invoving voice, data and video. The IMS-based FMC core network can provide a unified and powerful service engine for all kinds of access networks and an open service environment meeting the requirement of seamless service roaming of different terminals under different network environment. Full-network service with single-point access can be realized in this way.Following a brief introduction of IMS background, the state-of-the-art of IMS research is analyzed and the related technologies are discussed. Detailed scheme design of Guangdong CM-IMS is conducted based on IMS technologies and the existing service and network situation of Guangdong Mobile. Using the hierarchical design approach, in-depth investigation is devoted to the network connectivity scheme in both core layer and bearer layer as well as the solution sheme for Foshan network. Considering the critical situation of network security, the network security and management of IMS is designed so as to provide users with safer and more stable network services.
