Microstrip antenna has been widely used in the wireless communication system for it has a lot of merits such as small size, light weight, thin profile and easy to realize the same shape. The gain and the directional characteristics of a single microstrip radiation unit are hard to meet the needs of practical application, so people usually use the form of array to achieve a specific radiation direction and high gain. This paper first introduced the basic theories of the microstrip antenna and circular polarization. On the basis of theoretical calculations, a kind of rectangle circular polarization microstrip patch antenna working at 2.5GHz is designed, and the simulation software HFSS is used to simulate and optimize the antenna element. The axial ratio bandwidth of optimized antenna element is wider than 10MHz, and the gain is 3.2dB. After a deep study and analysis in the composition and the structure of the antenna array, a kind of 7 x 7 array composed of the patch unit above is designed. The result of simulation shows that the array is working at 2.5GHz, with sidelobe level at -35.3dB, the half-power beam width is about 17.9°and the gain is 15.3dB. The design requirements of high gain and low-sidelobe are reached very well, so this kind of antenna has a wide application prospect.
