With the rapid development of urban public transport in recent years, subway becomes the preferred choice to more and more people because of its various advantages such as high speed, punctuality, and environmental friendliness. With the advent of the information age and the prevalence of self-service mode, the self-service ticket machine, which is labor-saving, convenient and efficient in use, was introduced in the subway service system and gradually becomes a new trend in subway service. The user interaction design of this kind of machine has a direct impact on the usability and user satisfaction. The using efficiency and enthusiasm of the users, who are generally at a low level of cognitive and computer operating ability, could be negatively affected by the unfriendly and complex operating steps of the ticket machine in public places. The research on the interface usability of the self-service subway ticket machine is the focus of this paper, with the exploration of user needs as the starting point.Under the guidance of theories and methods in the field of user-centered interaction design and with the flow of "character analysis-task analysis-framework design", this paper explores the interaction design of self-service subway ticket machines. Firstly, a comprehensive understanding of the machine users' characteristics and need sand the existing usability problems are obtained by the investigation and analysis of the "man-machine" system, which helps design positioning. Secondly, personas are created to determine the machine's functions and interaction processes. Finally, a set of interface designs are proposed for Shanghai's self-service subway ticket machines, with the design of layout, colors, icons, and text as the first step. Usability evaluations of the designs are also conducted.
