Virtual simulation has gained increasing popularity as a practical application of virtual reality technology. Among the applications, virtual plant systematically describes the process of plant growth and development, and visually presents to people by means of virtual reality, computer graphics, plant physiological ecology and other theories, and by virtue of reliable data provided by the biology. The research on virtual plant includes one both on root (underground), and non-root (aboveground). Considerable achievements have been made on the aboveground part so far. However, the underground part makes up an important component of plant, which cannot be ignored. As the object of study on virtual plant is the individual plant, which is diverse and influenced by various factors, it becomes the difficulty point to construct realistic, vivid, and dynamic growth model by combining the plant morphology and physiology. This thesis introduces the research background, related theory, practical significance and current research status first, and makes a brief summary of the theoretical basis involved in the growth process of virtual plant. Secondly, after an elaborate analysis on a few popular methods of virtual plant modeling, we choose parametric random L-system to model the alhagi root system, which exists as one of the fractal theory. Finally, some environment constraints, such as hydrotropism and geotropism are taken into account, in order to construct the constraint model of virtual plant. We integrate them into the original alhagi morphological model, and achieve a more realistic simulation of the growth process.
