Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has many advantages, such as small volume, simple structure, low power consumption and long life. However, the receiving sensitivity of SOA is lower ,so it needs the preamplifier that leads to the higher cost. Thus in many systems reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is used as the modulators which can improve output extinction ratio better and can both modulate and amplify the optical signal by itself. These advantages make receiving sensitivity of RSOA higher. Therefore, RSOA maybe replace SOA as the modulator in the wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON). To analyze RSOA systematically, the purpose of this paper is to research its dynamic characteristics through establishing the dynamic model. The structure and the operating principle of RSOA is researched mainly, the dynamic theoretical model is established, the change of the carriers concentration with the length of RSOA and time is simulated, the trend of the change of the carriers under different probe power and pump power is analyzed, the optimal value of the probe power and pump power is extracted under the change of the best carriers. Based on the dynamic theoretical model, the dependency of gain, crosstalk, output extinction ratio and chirp on input light power, injection current, the length of active region is researched. These researches about RSOA play an important part in the further development of the theory of RSOA and its further application in WDM-PON.
