Digital image processing, which arose from the 1920's, had entered a high-speed developing era with the development of electronics and computer science. The dissertation describes the method in which a colored-resistor can be recognized and located, using a BMP image shot by a common, inexpensive USB camera. The research used several image algorithms such as converting a true-color bitmap to grayscale, binarization of a grayscale image, mathematical-morphological erosion, projection and linear fitting. The dissertation discussed the way of implement, then introduced and analyzed the algorithms, and then retouched and improved the algorithms according to the requirements of the task. Finally, all the thoughts are realized and a system test was performed. The system is developed with Microsoft Visual C++6.0, it can accurately locate the resistor in the image. The system is capable of marking the position of the resistor automatically, and extracting the pixels including useful color information, so that the resistor can be recognized.
