With ever-growing demand for spatial data in information age, the conventional way of data acquisition and data processing model can no longer meet the requirement of modern informatization. The traditional 3D modeling has many defects, such as data collection difficulties and inefficiencies, but the emergence of the laser 3D scanning technology has influenced the existing way of data collection, which provides new technical means of acquiring 3D spatial information. By using non-contact active survey, the laser scanning technology can directly and conveniently capture the high accuracy point cloud data of the object. As a new breakthrough in surveying technology field, it extends the application of 3D laser scanning technology from traditional manufacturing industry to measurement of large-scale projects,3D reconstruction of the digital city, cultural relic protection, and deformation monitoring for complex buildings etc.The digital application and preserve of cultural heritage are research focus and academic frontier issues recently, it is a challenging task to utilize 3D reconstruction to these complex structures of old architecture based on 3D laser scanned data. Compared with the traditional measuring technology, the 3D laser scanning technology has overcome the previous shortcomings in the measuring and research of the ancient architecture. The main contents of this paper is a entire process of 3D reconstruction based on terrestrial 3D laser scanner, including the point cloud data acquisition, data preprocessing and use NURBS surface modeling technology to make 3D reconstruction according to the geometric features of the ancientrelics. The theoretical method and application situation of 3D reconstruction based on three-dimensional laser scanning data have been summaried in this paper, the implementation plan of outdoor point cloud surveying by 3D laser scanner and related data processing procedure have been suggested also. In the meanwhile, the key theory and modeling methods of 3D modeling have been analyzed. Some ancient building as the study object has been selected in the article, the Leica ScanStation2 laser scanner and reverse engineering software Geomagic Studio 10 have been used to acquire data and process data, this study achieved an objective that a large-scale scattered point clouds constructs NURBS surfaces and 3D reconstructs. The demand of users for 3D laser scanning point cloud data processing software system and three-dimensional modeling of ancient architecture have been analyzed with the actual situation. Meanwhile, the combination of 3D laser scanning technology and GIS will accomplish cultural heritage digitization and preserve modernization. These not only have a broad applications perspective and academic study, but aslo play a significant role in the economic and social development. Finally, the author summarized the entire research work of this paper, by analyzing 3D laser scanning technology and the point of 3D modeling, also considering the current research status to explore the revelant application of model, and then predict the prospects of the technique. The more popular application of the 3D scanning technology in historic buildings mapping will certainly speed up the cultural relics' modern conservation, while promoting the related research and application in this field.
