Bridge,as a transportation hub, is the key to unblock traffic which is relevant to country's economic lifeline. With the increase of the usage lifetime of the bridge, it will inevitably lead to the collapse and other accidents caused by various forms of damage and destruction, which bring about the country's economy losses and casualties. There are many difficulties in manual inspection of bottom cracks of bridge which is the common structural defects of bridge. So it is vital to find the better way to measure the crack of bridge.In order to achieve at automatic detection of the bottom crack of concrete bridge to reduce the working risk and intenstiy, save test costs and improve the efficiency and precision of bridge inspection, the theory of digital image processing technology and related fractures measurement methods were studied in this paper.On the basis of processing and analyzing a large number of cracks image, this paper summarizes the basic characteristics of crack images and studies the theoretical method of extraction and measurement of cracks'length, width, and area. By using digital image processing technology, this paper first carry on preprocessing on the original crack's image, such as grayscalize, image enhancement, binarization, filtering, etc. Then carry on image analysis, such as cracks extraction, fragment connection, crack classification, parameter measurement. During this process, the regional characteristics values were calculated and analyzed to select the parameters to determine the type of cracks and find the conditions of extraction of crack objectives. On this basis,successfully develope a method of automatic extraction and measurement of cracks'parameters. The measurement results of multiple cracks's image validate the stability and effectiveness of the method. Finally, based on MATLAB platform a kind of software is designed to detect bottom crack of concrete bridge and verified by examples.
