With the development of battle space and electronic technology, the chaff, which is a kind of historical passive jamming, will possibly be used in outer space. The outer space chaff becomes a challenge for the battle performance of ground based radar. Radar urgently needs to explore outer space chaff characteristics and propose new anti-chaff methods. According to this, the diffusion characteristics and radar scattering characteristics of outer space chaff cloud are studied in this thesis. Based on the characteristics of outer space chaff, new simulation models of outer space chaff jamming characteristics are proposed, and new anti-chaff methods are searched respectively for ground based radar.Firstly, the motion characteristics of outer space chaff are studied. According to the motion analyzing of single chaff and statistical characteristics of chaff cloud, the diffusion of the whole chaff cloud is proposed. Then, we use Monte-Carlo method to simulate the motion and diffusion characteristics of outer space chaff cloud. Using this method a series of simulation results is presented.Secondly, radar scattering characteristics of outer space chaff cloud are studied. On the radar scattering characteristics of outer space chaff cloud, we build radar scattering models of chaff cloud for different radar signal forms, including signals of simple pulse, narrow-band LFM, and wide-band LFM. Then, the statistical radar scattering characteristics of chaff jamming are studied; the accurate formula of chaff cloud's average RCS is derived. The thesis also did a lot of work to conclude that the spectrum of the outer space chaff cloud can be affected by Doppler frequency shift and Doppler stretch. According to this, the radar echo of outer space chaff is simulated. After analyzing the radar echo of outer space chaff, the thesis proposes the method of evaluating the effect of outer space chaff jamming. The research results in this level provide the following level with theory basis, in which new anti-chaff methods are studied.At last, new anti-chaff methods for ground based radar are studied. After using the transcendental information to compensate the radar waves of chaff clouds, the signal accumulation method is used to detect targets. It is proved through simulation that this method can improve the detection performance of strong scattering point target in chaff cloud.
