This paper is using the automation project of penicillin fermentation workshop in a 6-APA (6-Aminopenicillanic acid) plant as background, illustrates the design and implement's method of penicillin fermentation process control system. This design and implement method not only can be applied to the automatic control design of fermentation industry, but also can give some reference for the application of advanced automation technology in fine chemical, pharmaceutical and other batch process industries. Dealing with the penicillin fermentation process control problem which is a very complex, a high degree of time-varying and nonlinear, a solution is raised by setting up a penicillin fermentation process control system comprising the DeltaV digital automation system, a variety of advanced measurement instruments and control valves. Applying modular control, the system is able to control various environmental factors of penicillin fermentation effectively. Via the application of fuzzy control method and adaptive control etc., the system can solve time-varying and delay problems of some parameters in industrial control.In the paper, deep study and design on penicillin fermentation process control methods are fully elaborated. Based on the penicillin fermentation process, a study was made first on the environmental parameters'influence to penicillin fermentation process, including dissolved oxygen, pH, temperatures, and pressure etc. Secondly, for the issue of measurement instrument selection, to select the correct type of instruments based on working principle of dissolved oxygen analyzers, pH Analyzer and electro- magnetic flowmeter, is important to ensure measurement accuracy could properly meet control requirements. Through analyzing the relationship between parameters and control objects, applying cascade control, adaptive control, fuzzy control and other advanced control principle, using measuring instruments, control units and executive devices, the control loop with dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, pressure etc. factors controlled parameters are established and the feed control system loop is established as well. A full and complete analysis and illustration was made for each loop control method.In the paper, take advantage of DeltaV digital automation system engineering design, construct control system network, design system function, set up the system hardware, install system software, combined each parameter control loops, and eventually establish a penicillin fermentation process control system with the function of parameters monitoring, process control and batch management.
