With the development of the Internet, the new types of network technology and rich applications are pushing the capability of Internet into the extreme. As one of the important principles of the Internet, the principle of end to end is also facing increasing challenges, many problems cannot be solved by modifying end systems, only can achieve a breakthrough by adding functionalities to the network. As a key network node, routers should be able to support services extension. But as the lack of computing and storage resources, the traditional routers can't meet the performance need of the diveSER services. This paper presents a router architecture that supports service extension-SER. SER router architecture incorporates a large number of computing and storage resources to support the router platform to quickly create services. This paper describes the functional components, data path, control path, and software architecture of the SER router and basing on the SER router architecture supporting service extension proposes a unified fabric architecture-XoIB. The major work and innovations of this paper include:(1) Studying and analyzing the demand of service extension in the router, for the lack of functionality in the existing router, proposing the SER router architecture, with highly reliable unified fabric as the core, integrating a large number of computing and storage resources to support a variety of service extension. Base on the SER router architecture, presenting a modular, distributed, layered SER router software architecture and analyzing the processes of the SER router software system.(2) By analyzing the SER unified fabric mechanism, presenting a unified fabric architecture supporting service extension-XoIB. Analyzing the XoIB logical structure, scalability and management, and presenting the XoIB packet processing algorithms.(3) Basing on XoIB architecture to achieve the integration of InfiniBand and Ethernet, that is EoIB. Presenting the key EoIB technology, implementing the IEF gateway, and deploying EoIB test environment.
