National image is becoming more and more significant as an important part of a country's soft power in the new century. American media,with their strong economy,advanced technology,rich experience in communications and the advantage of its language,play a significant role in the construction of the images of other countries. Xinjiang is a deep-rooted problem. After the 911 attack,Xinjiang have brought attention internationally as Muslim separatists linked to al-Qaeda-linked. The "July 5th incident" makes Xinjiang become the focus of world media again. Therefore,the study of American media's reports on China from case of Xinjiang-related is meaningful in theory as well as in practice.This article selects the reports of The New York Times about Xinjiang during 2001 to 2010 as samples,using the methods of Critical Discourse Analysis to do case studies. This article aims to analysis the China's image in the main media of the USA,probe how the media establish the image and find out the common rules: The image of China build by American major media is highly consistent with their country strategy.
