Serial communication, as currently the most widely used data communications, has a few advantages such as simple to realize and has stability performance, however, there are some limitations of Serial communication, mainly short distance and low rate transmission, making it applies only to the short distance between the local devices and the communications of less transmission rate demanding. so, how to improve the serial transmission rate and transmission distance without changing the serial port characteristics, becomes a problem urgently to be solved.Internet provides a solution. Computer network provides a great platform for data communications. Its high data rate and wide range of transmission has far exceeded people's imagination. If the serial device can access the internet, using the internet to transmit serial data, then the limitations of serial communication can be resolved. In this case, the serial - Network protocol converter appears. After introducing the background, this article analyzes the current development of serial port - Network protocol converter, and on this basis, raises an embedded serial port - network protocol converter novel based on SOPC (system on a programmable chip). Compared with the common products available in the market , SOPC-based is cutability, the system can be added or deleted according to the performance needs and price budget, which can greatly increases system flexibility. The novel introduces SOPC-based Embedded Serial - Network protocol converter from the overall design, hardware design, operating system and driver design, and application layer software design. ChapterⅡgives the overall design, including functions requirements and specifications, the port connector and the overall program; The third chapter is the detailed design of the hardware, given the detailed design of each module, including the NiosⅡsoft-core processor module , The network module, serial module, power crystal, and JTAG debug module; The fourth chapter describes the real-time operating system platformμC/OS and task management principles, UART core structure and serial port driver design, transmission queue design, and network chip driver design. The fifth chapter is an application design, giving the design of the eight tasks to achieve system functionality. The final chapter describes the development tools and programme download method, system debugging results is also given.
