With the rapid expansion of the computer network scale,the complexity of network is increasing and there are more and more faults. Due to the transmission, timeliness, relevance and other features of network faults, fault diagnosis in short time becomes difficult, resulting in growing loss. Thereby it is important to improve the robustness of the network through improving the capabilities of the network self-diagnostic, detecting potential network faults and achieving rapid network fault location and fault diagnosis.This paper describes network fault management model and the SNMP protocol which the network self-diagnostic system is based on, while the concepts and characteristics of network faults are introduced. Subsequently, by analyzing system functions this paper designs the system framework that is divided into information collection, information processing and information management layers in accordance with the information flow. Then this paper discusses a number of key technical issues applied into the information processing layer of network self-diagnosis, including alarm detection, fault location and fault diagnosis technology in details. Alarm detection is the basis of fault location and diagnosis. This paper describes three ways of alarm detection. Fault location is the key part of network self-diagnosis, which is difficult to achieve. By analyzing the characteristics of network faults, this paper introduces a kind of fault location algorithm based on causal graph model which relies on the network topological structure information, then illustrates the advantages of the algorithm through examples. Then this paper describes the fault diagnosis method based on rule reasoning and the designing of the diagnostic rule base using relational database.Finally, the implementation of the system main modules and system workflow are introduced. Through building environment and simulating network faults, it verifies the system functions, fault location algorithm and diagnosis method.
