Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) integrates cutting-edge technologies including sensing, micro-electromechanical systems, wireless communication and distributed information processing technology. WSN is self organization, easy to be deployed and of broad potentials in military, scientific and civilian applications, and it attracts the attention of academia and industry.Wireless Sensor Network is different from traditional networks for its limited energy, limited computing capacity, limited wireless communication ability, etc. So protocols design in WSN is highly dependent on special applications. Event monitoring is one of the main applications of sensor network. WSN makes up of amount of nodes can exactly monitor the critical condition of the deployed area and report it to the sink node for the purpose of alerting. This application requires the routing protocol to be reliable, with restrict latency and fault-tolerant. So the first issue in WSN research is reliable and efficient packets transmission.Addressing this problem, this paper proposes the segment-by-segment (SBS) data transfer method and a reliable event-driven routing protocol (kHSRP) which based on the SBS. In kHSRP, the packets are intermediated to sink node between segments. The Local Route Discovery mechanism can quickly find local paths through the segment by using rout discovery on-demand strategy, and the local paths among different segments can be connected together to form a complete path to the sink. In addition we develop a segment-to-segment packet recovery mechanism which can greatly reduce the transmission latency and power consumption. Finally kHSRP adapts energy-adaptive path election strategy to choose the optimal path, which can lead to load balancing and maximize the lifetime of WSN.We made theoretic performance analyze and implement simulation evaluations on GloMoSim platform. Results show that kHSRP protocol outperformance existing solution in term of packet delivery reliability and data packet delay in event-driven application.
