With the rapid development of network, computer network has penetrated into all aspects of the society, and becomes the backbone of today's information society. As the network size keeps growing, network management is facing increasingly high demand and growing difficulty. Network topology detection is the basis of network management, and research on it will help network managers'better understanding the network, to optimize the security and management. It is full of application value and practical significance, and becomes one of the focuses of research computer network.Corresponds to the network model with seven layers of Open System Interconnection (OSI), the network topology detection can be divided into two categories, detection of the network layer and detection of the data link layer. This paper analyzes the basic principles of network management and the status of research on network topology detection, and then respectively improves the detection methods in both categories.For topology detection of the network layer, this paper proposed a hierarchical method using protocols of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol). It divides the detection into two levels, the first level using SNMP to find out routing devices and subnets; and the second level using ICMP to establish the living hosts and type of a subnet. Moreover, this hierarchical structure is similar to the layer structure of a network; thereby it can well reflect levels of a network.For detection of the data link layer, this paper compares the address forwarding protocol (ARP) and the spanning tree protocol (STP), and then brings forward a combining algorithm of these two protocols, and put forward new determining rules and improved the processes of node detection, determining the connection between the bridges, and determining the connection between bridges and hosts.Finally, the paper designs and implements a prototype system of the network layer topology detection, and verifies the validity of the method by experiments.
