The main function of network management is to monitor and manage the network running status and the network devices. It's a key point to ensure the network working well. Network topology discovery is the basic function for the other functions in network management system. The study of this paper can be devided into two parts:the design and implementation of the network management system; the research and improvements of link layer discovery algorithms and the applications of these algorithms.On the study of design and implementation of network management system, first of all, we made an introduction of the network background, related work and also network management protocols. After an analysis on these, we decided to implement our system as an enterprise grade network management application and focused on the management of hosts and services. Finally, we designed a good architecture and made our system have a good scalability and realized every function module very well.On the study of the link layer topology discovery algorithms, first, the paper introduces background knowledge, related work and development of link layer topology discovery technology and makes an introduction and analysis of some commonly used algorithms. Then it focuses on the topology discovery algorithms based on STP protocol and algorithms based on Address Forwarding Table. On the study of STP algorithms, we found that those algorithms had not make a decision on the situation that there has some switches running SNMP protocol but not running STP protocol in the network. So we resolved this problem by added a calculation of forwarding address. On the study of algorithms based on Address Forwarding Tables, we developed some judge rules which should be right in the case of address forwarding table incomplete and then made an improvement of these algorithms which can ensure finding correct network topology. Our system can make an automatic choice of these two algorithms for topology discovery based on actual network conditions.
