The experiments, carried out by C.D. Boley to investigate the laser irradiationeffect on thin aluminum sheet under surface airflow, indicate that the pressuredifference produced by surface airflow plays an important role in the breakup of thesheet. Based on the experiments, the laser irradiation effect is studied in this thesisnumerically, using the widely-used software ANSYS. The work includes:(1) The experiments by C.D. Boley are analyzed, including the setup and theresults, and the research methods in the thesis are put forward.(2) The theoretic model about the dynamical responses of solid subjected to bothmechanical and thermal loads are introduced. With proper simplification, a thermoelastic-plastic model is employed to study the response of the thin aluminum sheet.(3) Numerical simulations are done to study the laser irradiation effect on thinaluminum sheet under surface airflow. The temperature field is obtained and comparedwith result by an analytical model. The deformation and stress distribution in the sheetare thoroughly analyzed. It is found that the pressure load of 6000Pa, which is thepressure difference produced by surface airflow of 100m/s upon a flat sheet, has littleinfluence on the deformation and stress distribution of the sheet. In order to reveal therole of airflow in the response of the thin aluminum sheet under laser irradiation, thespatial distribution of the flow pressure should be considered when the sheet bulgestoward the airflow.
