In this paper, the properties of Nd:YAP crystal and the thermal effects of LD side-pumped 1.3μm Nd:YAP laser were studied. The best projection angle of pumped energy on Nd:YAP laser rod was calculated and the optimal water temperature of the laser was studied. The pre-theoretical study was verified finally through the experiments. The primary content reads as follows:(1) The properties of Nd:YAP crystal were studied, the advantages of Nd:YAP in 1.3μm band compared with other crystals and its special properties of linear polarization in the laser output were studie. The best projection angle of pumped energy on Nd:YAP laser rod was calculated.(2) The thermal effect of laser has been studied, a mothed of critical cavity to measure the thermal focal length was introduced. And the thermal focal length was measured through the experiments.(3) The optimal water temperature of the laser was studied and the optimal water temperature of the laser was calculated finally.(4) The pre-theoretical study was verified finally through experiments.A 68 W maximum 1.3μm continuous laser output power under a input power of 840W was obtained with a symmetrical flat cavity and a 7% transmission output lens,The optical conversion efficiency was 8%.
