With the Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology highly applied and promoted in next-generation backbone network, many higher requirements are proposed to the operation and maintenance of the MPLS network. OAM functions of the layer above or below MPLS layer can not meet the special needs of MPLS OAM due to the introduction of new MPLS network architecture, so we need to provide a separate set of OAM mechanisms. ITU-T and IETF do a lot of work focused on the standardization of MPLS OAM, this thesis aims at the technology of operation, management and maintenance in MPLS network and at its implementation.Firstly, this thesis deeply analyses the source codes of MPLS protocol stack in Linux platform, to ascertain the specific implementation principle. Secondly, through the analysis of the existing mechanisms for fault detection and protection switching, this thesis will put forward an implementation project for MPLS OAM, which combines fault detection technology recurred to the ITU-T's CV mechanism and protection switching technology. Moreover, design and implement the various functional modules in the overall framework of the implementation project. Finally, tests the proposed MPLS OAM implementations in the virtual machine's Linux platforms. By means of the network packet capture analysis, evaluates the situation of the MPLS protocol stack extended to confirm whether the CV system is operating normally. meanwhile, gives a joint testing among the extended CV MPLS protocol stack modules and the network management module and fault processing module , to verify the various modules of the proposed MPLS OAM implementations can work together to achieve a complete MPLS network OAM functions.This thesis researches the MPLS OAM mechanisms, especially focuses on the mechanisms for MPLS OAM fault detection and protection switching, furthermore, implements these mechanisms on the Linux platform. This can provide some experience to the further implementation of MPLS OAM mechanism; besides, the fault detection module of the proposed MPLS OAM implementations uses the maintenance of the reverse channel based on MAC-level mechanisms , this can offer some reference to the follow-up study on how to reduce the dependence on the reverse LSP in the process of failure detection .
