This thesis takes the Cai Yong's works as the object of the research. The main part of the thesis includes five parts.The first part of the thesis attempts to do a preliminarily deduction about the collection time of Cai Yong's works, under the background that the works of people lived in Han dynasty have be collected. The Cai Yong's works is recorded earlier by monograph on literature of history of the Sui dynasty, so there is no doubt that the works of Cai Yong had been written during Liang dynasty. Moreover, according to collecting pertinent materials, it can be thought that the works had been collected initially before 303 A.D. in conclusion the book had been arranged twice during the 300 years from the Wei and Jin to the South and North dynasties.The second part presents the description of the works in ancient literatures which contain mainly ancient bibliography and other pertinent documents. This part has been divided six stages, including Wei Jin to Sui dynasties, Tang and five dynasties, Song and Yuan dynasties, Ming dynasty, Qing dynasty, and since the republican. The last part falls into four categories, private bibliotheca, library catalogues, union catalogues, and overseas catalogues.The encyclopedias compiled in Tang and Song dynasties will be discussed in the third part. Cai Yong's creation quoted by these encyclopedias not only from the works of Cai Yong, but also the books such as Qing Cao and the chapters of Lunar Order, which spread as single books. Because these quotations preserve the original appearance of the book, so they hold a high emendate value. In the part, a rough statistics on the citing situation in these literatures, such as commentary on the waterways classics, copies of thenorthern study, book class of poems and essays, will be done. Something need to be explained are laid in footnote.The version system of Cai Yong's works will be investigated in fourth part. The current versions of the book are mainly emerged in Ming and Qing dynasties. These connected versions can be divided into five version systems, including arranged by Hua Jian, Yang Xian, Xu Ziqi, Hai Yuan Library, and Zhang Pu. In the fifth part, the version edited by Yan Kejun will be assessed. Taking Ou Jing's version and so called kerchief and box edition as master copy, Sir Yan collated many missing contents from encyclopedias compiled in Tang and Song dynasties, which make his edition worthy to be discussed both in content and style.
