With the information gets important today, volume of data grew rapidly, more and more data being stored. It's difficult to manage and there's bottleneck since data grew and storage widely used in many areas. Data with different meanings in different stage since it has their own life cycle. The value is most high when it's first generated. With days gone there's less access and value also dropped. But data increase made difficulties for management. Defined data with tiers can simplify storage management. The important and frequently used data can be accessed within shortest time, put the less used data into cheap storage device.The focus of this article is how to define storage with multiple layers within one storage system base on different access frequency of data, to meet varies requirements. Use EFD disk and other kinds of disks made tiered storage, as EFD disk widely used in recent years. Software used for control different characteristic disks in automatic tier storage, achieved hot data automatically moved by use different algorithms analyzing the workload, continually monitoring, hot data analysis, data movement. Performance and capacity requirement can be achieved meanwhile kept the same total cost of ownership as before.Through Analysis for feature of database data, use automatic tier storage theory with database application, we can get the result of performance improvement and reduce the total cost of ownership by using automatic tier storage. Automatic tier storage can also be used more widely with virtual cache, storage virtualization and Cloud computing in the future.
