With the development of information technology, Cloning and restoring images of operation system on computers is gradually replacing the method of OS installing in traditional way. In the manufacture process of OEM factories of personal computer, Restoring OS on clients in a batch from a server can reduce the cost of manufacture hours significantly. For the requirement of OEM manufacturing, we brought forward an issue for designing a system for OS cloning and restoring in a batch. This paper describes the process of configuration and constructing of PXE server, including DHCP server, TFTP server and other configurations in detail. After the introduction of the configuration of PXE server, this paper mainly focuses on the designing of the module of disk clone and restore, which can clone a disk device to an image and restore to a disk device. The module includes the backup and restore of MBR, the hidden data after MBR, partition table and partitions respectively. In this paper, a method for indexing the used data blocks in the disk with a chain‐descriptor is put forward based on Partclone to optimize the software by reducing the time cost and support the function for locate the breakpoint and continue the process of cloning or restoring. With the function of clone and restore a disk, an interface for IPC is defined to echo the process on the server.Aim at the security requirement of the software, a method of authentication for client is advanced in the paper. The server gets the MAC address for the client and tries to match the address in a MAC table and discuss the method for the Hash collision. Hash function for searching is constructed and analyzed. The compiling of the start kernel for PXE client is described.
