Smart home integrates automation control and computer networks with communication technology, connects kinds of home devices together via home networks and provides people with intelligent, comfortable living environment. Cable techniques are used in most traditional solution schemes of smart home system, but there are many disadvantages, such as the needs of wiring, high installation cost etc. In recent years, the short-range wireless communication technology has been rapidly developed. Compared with cable techniques, it has lots of advantages, such as flexibility, low cost etc. So, using the short-range wireless communication technology to the development of smart home system will be the technical trend.Zigbee is an emerging short-range wireless communication technology and is mainly used in the field of monitoring and control. Its technical advantages, such as low complexity, low power consumption, just meet the requirement of smart home system on the home network communication techniques. In a addition, the price of the chips that supports Zigbee on the market, such as CC2430 produced by TI company, MC13XX series manufactured by Freescale, is very cheap and this can greatly reduces the cost of smart home system.Firstly in this thesis, a whole design scheme of smart home system based on Zigbee is provided on the basis of deeply research on the principle of Zigbee protocol combined with the needs analysis of general smart home system. Secondly, the hardware models of three kinds of nodes, namely the control center, the route node and the terminal node, are built using the development board C51RF-3-PK which is produced by Chengdu Wireless Dragon Communication Company. The software system of this three kinds of nodes is designed based on ZStack which is issued by TI company to implement Zigbee protocol. Then, this thesis simulates the home network via this three kinds of nodes and verifies the correctness of the design by the Zigbee protocol analyzer which can capture and analyze the data in the home network. At last, a monitoring subsystem is designed by Visual Basic 6.0. The home network subsystem can be monitored in real time by the monitoring subsysterm. When the report data which comes from the home network subsystem is out of safe range, users will be alerted by the monitoring subsystem via sending an alarm Email, then users may control the home network subsystem remotely by one TCP connection to the local monitoring program built by the remote monitoring program. Besides, the report data coming from the home network subsystem can be stored into the backstage database by the monitoring subsystem to facilitate query and analysis. The smart home system based on Zigbee designed in this thesis not only has the function that the traditional possesses, but also overcomes the shortcomings of tradiontal systems. Besides, an alarm Email can be sent by the monitoring subsystem to users in time before an accident happens. Therefore, this system possesses technical advance and application value.
