Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) combines both the advantages of technology maturity of Ethernet and the high bandwidth of the Passive Optical Network (PON) which makes it one of the most attractive solution for future broadband access network. Due to the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) mode and upstream bandwidth sharing characteristics, the Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithm is a key technique in EPON system and application schemes. This thesis presents a comprehensive and indepth study on DBA algorithm in EPON and its application technology.Firstly, this thesis presents the current situation of access network, access network major technologies, technical features and development trends of EPON, respectively. Then EPON system architecture, fundenmantal principle and key techniques are introduced in detail. Followed are the illustration of Multi-Point Control Protocol (MPCP) control frame structure and communication process. Some classic DBA algorithsms are analyzed including IPACT and cyclic-polling, both the advantages and disadvantages of the algorithms are presented. An improved transmission scheme is proposed and simulated according to theoretical analysis. Simulation results show that the modified algorithm improves upstream bandwidth efficiency and has good delay characteristics.. Finally, this thesis discusses EPON network planning and deployment strategy in Wuxi Telecom. Pactical application models and specific application project are given.
