Radiation pattern of the array antenna depends on the number of the elements, the elements' positions and weight coefficients. Control of the three factors can change the characteristic of the radiation field. How to optimize the factors which affect the array pattern is discussed this paper.This thesis firstly introduces academic background and theory of the research subject, and briefly introduces the basic knowledge of array pattern synthesis.Then several classical analysis algorithms and numerical algorithms are introduced and their advantages and disadvantages are comprehensive analyzed. Secondly this paper introduces a new non-iterative method for linear array synthesis based on the matrix pencil method (MPM). This work extends the MPM-based synthesis method to the synthesis of shaped-beam patterns by using the forward-backward matrix pencil method (FBMPM). Numerical examples show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed synthesis method.Finally this paper extends the MPM-based synthesis method to the synthesis of planar array patterns. An example shows the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed synthesis method.
