In today's broadcasting and television industry, the non-linear editing (NLE) systems have been widely adopted due to the digitalization of program production and broadcasting. In general, the output of a NLE system is a sequence that describes the temporal order, blending, special effects of audio and video files. The sequence is further converted to a single audio/video file for the final broadcasting. Therefore, the time consumed by rendering a sequence directly determines the efficiency of program preparing. To tackle this bottleneck, the thesis is focused on how to enhance the sequence rendering capability. At first, this thesis studies the necessity of cluster-based sequence rendering through the analysis on industry status, which shows that the single-machine processing is the bottleneck of improving efficiency in the traditional sequence rendering techniques. Accordingly, a new design methodology is proposed for sequence rendering by mostly utilizing the available hardware resources. The thesis also highlights the vision of cluster-based rendering through efficiency comparison. In the chapter of overall design, the framework for cluster-based rendering control is described, including the general functionalities of and relationship among the physically separated modules. Then, in the chapter of detailed designs, the processing flow and interface definition of each module are presented. Finally, the application of the proposed cluster-based sequence rendering technology is introduced, especially in the broadcasting and television industry.
