Explosive growth of data pose a severe challenge for the rapid availability and manageability of data (such as 24×7 uninterruptible service, fast and accurate data recovery, disaster tolerance, low cost management, etc). The traditional method of data backup has been becoming more and more difficult to deal with these new challenges. Cloud Backup, as an emerging backup technology, with its on-demand storage, resources sharing, green environmental protection, low cost and other numerous advantages, is receiving more attention from both academia and industry.At present, the research and application of cloud backup is still at the beginning stage. How to research and develop a practical cloud backup system to meet the future needs of large-scale data increasing is still a dominant and pending problem. This paper selects Cloud Backup as research object, and mainly focuses on the research of cluster storage, virtualization, load balancing and cache management. The achievements of this paper intend to provide relevant researchers with pratical methods for the research and development of a cloud backup system. Main works include:(1) Used cluster storage technology to design hierarchical cloud backup system architecture; (2) Introduced virtualization technology to achieve global unified namespace and file management; (3) Employed policy-based load balancing mechanism to implement the static balance while backing up user files and dynamic balance while migrating files among storage servers, and then optimized and promoted the whole system performance;(4) Designed the intelligent cache management mechanism to improve the system response-ability for data access; (5) Self investigated and developed a cloud backup prototyping system based on the design ideas and key technologies mentioned above.Test results show that the cloud backup system studied in this paper realized the expected functionalities and goals. The adopted technologies and methods can provide help for the development of other relevant systems, and have promising application and promotion value.
