The famous educator said that successful teaching is not to force the students to learn but to motivatetheir interest. So we can conclude that interest will drive the students to learn, but how to cultivate thestudents' interest plays a very important role during the English learning process. Once the junior highschool students' interest is aroused, it is a great help to the students, they will actively learn English and thestudents' learning enthusiasm and initiative will be motivated. With the development of the New EnglishCurriculum Standard, it mainly aims at motivating and developing the students' learning interest, buildingup the students' learning confidence, cultivating the excellent learning habit and effective learningstrategies, developing the students' ability of self-motivated learning and cooperative learning, acquiringthe English basic skills, which is, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. In junior high schoolEnglish teaching process, teachers should try their best to motivate the students' English learningenthusiasm and initiative and cultivate the students' English learning interest.Under the guidance of interest and motivation theory, the author gets down to investigating themethods to cultivating the students' learning interest. Teachers' questionnaires and students' questionnairesare handed down, combined with individual student's and teacher's interview and classroom observation toinvestigate and analyze.The purpose of the thesis is to find out:1. What methods do the teachers often adopt to cultivate the students' English learning interest?2. What methods do the students often adopt to motivate and sustain their own English learning interest injunior high school?From the investigation and research, the following understanding is shown to cultivate the students'English learning interest. Firstly, the harmonious relationship between the students and the teachers is thefirst students' interest resource. Secondly, helping the students to build up confidence and make them enjoyEnglish learning. Thirdly, the flexible and all different kinds of teaching skills can make the students learnEnglish initiatively and actively. Fourth, the interesting and all different kinds of English activities, games,and other English resources can sustain the students' English learning interest. This thesis is made up of five chapters. The first part is research background and significance and thestructure of the thesis. The second part is elaborated from brief review of studies on English learninginterest and the relevant theories concerning interest and motivation and pointed out that English learninginterest plays an important role in English learning and teaching. The third part is research design, theauthor makes an investigation by making use of classroom observation, questionnaires and interview. Thefourth part is to analyze the teachers' and students' questionnaires, teachers' and students' interview andclassroom observation and conclude the current situation of the students' English learning interest, theopinion on the teachers' teaching methods and the methods the students adopt to motivate and sustain thestudents' English learning interest. And then from the relationship between the students and the teachers,the students' confidence and the design of the teaching procedures to explore how to improve the Englishlearning interest in junior high school, in order to find an effective way to solve the problem.
