Chemistry curriculum reform in Middle school aims to improve students'scientific literacy. It advocates various learning methods which take scientific inquiry as their focus. Those methods can help students obtain the chemical knowledge, skills and methods necessary for their future development and furthermore improve students'inquiry ability. New chemistry textbook of Middle school which contains many inquiry projects used to guide students to carry out inquiring activities has changed the traditional way of giving the knowledge directly. With the new textbook, students can obtain knowledge through their own inquiry learning. The present thesis attempts to explore how to cultivate students'inquiry ability by making full use of the new chemistry textbook.This thesis is divided into seven parts. Chapter one is background information. It states the necessity of developing students' scientific inquiry ability to meet the requirements of times and the demands of new chemistry curriculum reform. Chapter two is theoretical basis of the present work. Chapter three analyses the design and the forms of materials in the new textbook. Chapter four investigates the status quo of students'scientific inquiry ability on the basis of questionnaire and interview. Chapter five concerns how to train students' inquiry ability by using experiments and exercises in the new textbook. Chapter six lists three detailed cases of inquiry teaching. Chapter seven is the conclusion, which gives the summary of the success and failure in teaching the new chemistry textbook.
