| Currently, English teaching in senior high schools in china mainly emphasizes the teaching of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure, having ignored the cultural background and cultural study. Students always made"cultural mistakes"in daily communication with native speakers. It has undermined the cultivation of students'communicative competence to a large extent.According to the New Curriculum Standard reinforced in 2003, the cultivation of students'cultural awareness has been given much attention to. The cultural awareness which has been added into the Curriculum Standard includes four parts: cultural knowledge, cultural understanding, cross-cultural awareness, and cross-cultural communication competence. So it is necessary for the senior high school teachers to carry out cultural teaching in English class, the teachers should develop the students'comprehensive competence of language.The thesis is intended to investigate the current situation of cultural teaching in senior high schools. Four ways are used in this research, they are as follows: classroom observation, cultural test, questionnaires for both teachers and students, interviews for the students. By the authentic data collected from the research, the author learns about the major problems of cultural teaching and learning in senior high school. But under the heavy burden of college entrance examination, cultural teaching in English class has not been implemented effectively for senior high school students. As the results of insufficient cultural teaching, students'have lower cultural awareness and poor cross-cultural competence. Based on the findings, the author proposes some suggestions to enhance cultural teaching and learning in senior high school.The implementation of cultural awareness is not only good for students'comprehensive language competence, but also helpful to the enhancement of students'cross-cultural communicative competence. So in the future, cultural teaching should be implemented effectively in senior high school. |
