Language is an indispensable part of culture. Present American linguist Kramsky said:"Language teaching is culture teaching." English teaching will lose the meaning of its own if it is separated from culture teaching. However, current teaching modes of high schools are still ruled by entrance examination. So the English teaching of most high schools all reflects the same traditional developing mode which cares more about knowledge rather than ability. Most English teachers and students focus on vocabulary, sentence structures and grammar and ignore the cultural knowledge. Cultural awareness is regarded as one of the five major goals in the curriculum standards which are urgent for high school students. Cultural awareness has not only been stressed but also includes a correct guidance of culture teaching in English class. On the basis of the new standards in teaching English, the author investigates culture-bound teaching of English teachers and culture learning of high school students in Senior High School Attached to Jilin University. The author also offers some teaching suggestions on how to mix cultural awareness with English learning and teaching in order to improve the students’intercultural communication ability. It also provides some wise suggestions and feasible approaches to increase students’cross-cultural awareness and ability. |
