At present, there still exist some problems of English education in China. One of the most serious problems is the neglect of students' oral English, especially the pupils' oral English. This study intends to practice recording portfolio assessment in primary students' English learning, and tries to find out whether recording portfolio assessment is a feasible and effective tool for improving students'oral English. The statements of the following questions will be given by the results of the experiment:1) Can recording portfolio assessment help the students cultivate interest and confidence in learning English? 2) Can recording portfolio assessment help the pupils improve oral English?The subjects involved in this experiment were 40 students in the 4th grade. The participants were divided into two equal classes. One class was taken as the experimental class and the other class as the control class. The author developed recording portfolios in the experimental class while traditional summative assessment was used in the control class. Throughout the experiment, some research methods were used, included qualitative analysis method and quantitative analysis method. Experimental data were collected from questionnaires, interviews, and tests. All the collected data were analyzed by SPSS and qualitative analysis. Through the analysis on the experimental results, the following conclusions are drawn:1) Recording portfolio assessment can help the students cultivate interest and confidence in learning English.2) Recording portfolio assessment can help the pupils improve oral English.The results showed that although the effectiveness of recording portfolio assessment in the experiment is obvious, there still exist some deficiencies of recording portfolio, such as time-consuming, complex. All these problems need further research to improve.
