For a long time,reading plays an important role in English teaching in junior middle school.Whether from the point of the examination or from the comprehensive level of students,reading can effectively reflect the comprehensive ability of students.But in the current,junior middle school students’ reading level is difficult to meet the requirements of the new curriculum.How to improve the efficiency of student’s reading quality has always been the goal and direction of English teachers.For the current junior middle school students,who lack confidence,interest in English reading,rarely use reading strategy,don’t have good reading habits and many other issues,the assessment has an important role for the comprehensive development of the students.The author attempts to start from the assessment,using the portfolio assessment and change the situation of junior middle school students’ English reading.Portfolio assessment,as a formative assessment,is dynamic,which provides opportunities for students to evaluate and reflect by themselves in their own learning process.This kind of student-oriented assessment method is in line with the current curriculum requirements,to promote the comprehensive development of students.In this paper,the portfolio assessment in the junior middle school English reading teaching,tries to solve the following three questions:1.Can portfolio assessment improve students’ ability of using reading strategies?2.Can portfolio assessment improve students’ self reflection ability in English reading?3.Can portfolio assessment improve students’ English reading proficiency?The author took two parallel classes in Grade 8 of No.12 middle school in Yulin as the research subjects,and carried on the teaching experiment for four months.The age and sex ratio of these two classes of students were basically the same.The author used the portfolio assessment in Class 1 Grade 8 and used the traditional summative assessment method in Class4 Grade 8.In this study,the author adopted the method of quantitative research and qualitative research.To be more specific,the questionnaires,tests and review were used as research tools,and the data were collected and analyzed.The experimental results showed that the application of portfolio assessment in juniormiddle school English reading teaching can promote students’ use of reading strategies in reading,enhance self-confidence,improve the ability of autonomous learning and self reflection ability.At the same time,portfolio assessment can effectively improve students’ English reading level.According to the results,portfolio assessment has many positive effects for improving students’ reading attitude,reading ability,so the teacher can use this assessment method in reading and expend to other aspects in English.From the content of using portfolio assessment,the teacher should pay closely attention to the students with different level.And teacher should give students’ timely feedback,when she found student’s problems.As a new educational assessment method,it needs the teachers to be professional and technical,so as to make it effective.
