Wilkins (1972:111) once said, "Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary everything cannot be passed." It is the vocabulary that directly affects the ability to use English. Since vocabulary is essential to language and English learning, vocabulary learning strategies have received increased attention recently. This paper analyses the background of researches into English vocabulary learning strategies, including the findings of the researches at home and abroad. Although a lot of studies deal with the correlation between English vocabulary learning strategies and academic achievements of senior school students, a few of them focus on senior students in rural area. he subjects were 102 students of grade one in a senior high school, who answered the questionnaires. When we analyse English vocabulary learning strategies they're using, we can find that the students of grade one seldom adopt English vocabulary learning strategies; Good and poor English learners differ in English vocabulary learning strategies; there exits a certain correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and academic achievements. After a 3-month English vocabulary learning strategy training in the experimental class (While the controlled class has no such training), the students in the experimental class and the controlled class who answered the same questionnaire had the mid-term and the final tests. According to the data, analyse the relation between English vocabulary learning strategies and the academic achievements of senior school students, and we can conclude that vocabulary learning strategy training can change the students' view on the vocabulary studies and arouse their interest in vocabulary learning. It also helps students improve their English competence and help them form good English learning habits.
