"Zang-Yi passage"theory was first put forward by Mr. Fei Xiaotong, the famous sociologist in China. Zang-Yi passage refers to the independent territory of nationality with a profound history, including Sichuan, West Yunnan and East Tibet. This nationality passage, in its long historical change, has gradually developed into a cultural deposit string with its unique glamour, and has influenced the formation of the chief nationality and culture in Southwest China. Due to the precipitousness of geography, inaccessible transportation, and less development of economy and culture along the Zang-Yi passage, the development of its national traditional sports is still slow and remains a rather primitive state; that is, the trinity of singing, dancing and sports cooperates and achieves a certain social function. This thesis introduces"Zang-Yi passage", an academic concept of nationality science and historical science, into the research realm of the national traditional sports. Therefore, the thesis not only has an extended research category, but also actively propels the cultural horizons of the national traditional sports. From the spatiotemporal point of view, the Zang-Yi passage, or the traverse mountains, or the Six-river Basin, is inhabited by various Tibetan-Bermese minority nationalities such as Zang, Qiang, Yi, Bai, Naxi, Lisu, Pumi, Dulong, Nu, Achang, Jingpo, Lahu, Hani and Jinuo. From the point of view of the national traditional sports culture, there are, in this region, national traditional sports of religious sacrifice such as"Qiangmu","Dongba jump","Suni jump", and sports of customs and etiquette such as"Guozhuang","Duhuo","Xianzi", and"Biaoniu", and sports of production and living such as archery, crossbow shooting, horse-riding, pole-climbing and top whipping. The thesis has not only conducted a general review of the national traditional sports events, but also discussed the cultural characteristics of multi-nationality group presented in this region. The thesis, from the cultural level, makes an analysis of the historical origins, characteristics and contents of the national traditional sports culture along the Zang-Yi passage, with the methodology of documentation, interviews of experts, field investigation, comparative research, and typologic analysis. Through the analysis of the national traditional sports culture along the Zang-Yi passage, this thesis has carried on a detailed description of the national traditional sports of different types: types of religious sacrifice, customs, and etiquette. Based on experimental research, the thesis investigates the fusion and development of the national traditional sports culture along the Zang-Yi passage, and its existing value in modern society. The thesis, from the perspective of nationality, religion, history and folk customs, also analyzes the characteristics and traces of the fusion and development of the national traditional sports culture between the minority nationalities and Han nationality, and among the minority nationalities. Considering the actual regional situation of the minority nationalities along the Zang-Yi passage, the thesis, in its last part, has put forward some strategies in developing the national traditional sports culture, and attempts to provide some useful references for the government and the relevant departments in policy-making, planning and developing the national traditional sports culture in the region of the Zang-Yi passage.
