Compared with the definitions of "collectivism/dependent self" which are used tointerpret Chinese self by western scholars,"Zhongyong self" is a more accurate andappropriate description of self structure of Chinese. It can better explain the characteristicsof Chinese personality and their behaviors. This study attempts to construct a relativelysystematic theory of Zhongyong self based on Chinese native culture. The study includesconstructing the theory of Zhongyong self, developing the Zhongyong Self Questionnairefor college students and discussing the characteristics of Zhongyong self of collegestudents, in order to provide empirical basis for amending and improving the Zhongyongself theory, and to provide guidance for the practice of college students' personalityeducation. What's more, the study explores the correlation between Zhongyong self ofcollege students and their choice of strategies when coping with interpersonal conflict. Theconclusions are as follows:(1) The Zhongyong Self Questionnaire for college students is proved to be a scientificand effective tool with good reliability and validity. Zhongyong self of college students hasa multi-dimensional structure which contains "adaptive regulation","yin and yangcognition","external peaceful experience" and "internal moderate experience".(2) On the whole, the four dimensions of Zhongyong Self of college students aresorted by score: yin and yang cognition, external peaceful experience, adaptiveregulation, internal moderate experience.(3) Zhongyong self of college students and each of the four dimensions do not showsignificant differences in the variable of gender and major.(4) Zhongyong self of college students shows a significant difference between the firstgrade and the third. The freshmen get significantly higher scores in the Zhongyong SelfQuestionnaire than the juniors. There are not significant differences between other grades. (5) Zhongyong self of college students shows a significant difference in the variableof school style. Students from the college get significantly higher scores in the ZhongyongSelf Questionnaire than the ones from the key university and ordinary university.(6) There is a high correlation between Zhongyong self of college students and theirchoice of strategies when coping with interpersonal conflict. The group which gets higherscores in the Zhongyong Self Questionnaire is more inclined to choose the strategy ofcooperation, while the group which gets lower scores would tend to choose the strategy ofcooperation or compromise, both of which have a similar rate.Zhongyong self is a relatively new topic for research, and now there are few relatedstudies at home and abroad. This study makes a bold attempt and exploration in thetheoretical construction and questionnaire design on Zhongyong self.
