Filial piety is an important part of Chinese traditional culture and Chinese civilizatio n essence. Confucian tradition of filial piety has played an effective role in standing more stable family and society. For thousands of years, filial piety has been standardizing wor ds and deeds of the Chinese people. Therefore, the study of filial piety has important acad emic and practical value. In this paper, we will probe into the filial piety of the Five Dyna sties period. It is divided into four chapters:The first chapter is the introduction section, is divided intotwo parts. The first is a re view of academic research on filial piety. The researches no matter for any dynasty or for any particular problem of filial piety will have the inspiration and educational value. And the results are quite rich. The second part is an overview of the development of filial piety before the Five Dynasties. At different times, including the period before Qin Dynasty, Q in, Han, Wei, Jin, Sui and Tang Dynasties until the Five Dynasties, filial piety had differ ent forms and political status.The second chapter discusses the methods to strengthen the initiatives of filial piety i n Five Dynasties period. The methods by the government to strengthen the initiatives of t he filial piety divided into several parts. The major part is about filial piety promulgation of the policy, norms of filial piety, and the commendation for dutiful sons. Five Dynasties period is an extremely tumultuous period in Chinese history. Extreme turbulence, instabi lity of people life and the required material scarcity, coupled with the policy of heavy we apons virtual text, all of these made people could not follow the traditional filial piety. Bu t the ruler wanted to change the social atmosphere of this period filial piety weak, by taki ng some means.The third chapter discusses the various social strata of the Five Dynasties period for the actual practice of filial piety. In concrete life, the government's urges combined with t he constraints of folk customs, people of the Five Dynasties acted demonstrated complian ce with the filial piety. Due to the strict hierarchy of the feudal society, different strata ha ve different performance in filial piety. Emperor, bureaucratic literati and commoners hav e different filial piety requires, in their own social strata. The fourth chapter focuses on the history understanding of filial piety in the Five Dy nasties. The period of Five Dynasties is between the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty. Th ese two historical eras have distinctive character of themselves. Transiting from Tang to Song used only fifty-three years. On filial piety, Five Dynasties also played a historical ro le of the nexus. In the order of the Tang Dynasty liberal social atmosphere, to the Song D ynasty rigorous social atmosphere, conflict of the courtesy and the law, with the gliding tr ansformation of social ritual, the filial piety of the Five Dynasties period had unique posit ion and its own role.This paper tries to take the encouragement on filial piety from the government, pract ices on filial piety from all levels of society, and special role of the filial piety in this peri od as the major research questions. I hope it could have more understanding in-depth oft he filial piety in this particular period.
