Various approaches have been presented as to the culture issues in modern china by the Chinese intellectuals. The neo-Confucianism holds that, in an era in which the soul of Chinese culture is lost, the intellectuals should struggle to their feet, redefining the new directions for lives. They also argue that people should embrace sageliness inside and kingliness outside. New generation of liberals hold that the feasible approaches to reconstruct the Chinese culture are through construction of the Chinese liberalism academic resources and reflections on the counter-traditionalism. Yu yingshi, who spent most of his childhood in the countryside, followed the teachings of Qian mu and Yang liansheng, which gave him a rigid training in academics. Since he lived in a time when the currents of thoughts were so mixed, he established the idea of resolving cultural issues via academic approaches in his early years.Yu yingshi holds that, the top vitality of the may4th movement is its consciousness of culture. Based on this ground, he argues that the Chinese culture should merge with the western culture energetically. However, the second generation of neo-Confucian distastes the may4th while yu Yingshi argues that there should be a clear clarification of entanglement of the may4th and the rise of Chinese communism. A general received wisdom is that may4th is against the tradition, while Yu yingshi argues that the hypothesis of the renaissance and the enlightenment are not compatible with each other, a historical approach should be introduced to reflect the may4th movement, which goes that may4th movement is compatible with the traditional Chinese culture intrinsically, the new thoughts of may4th should be broaden into every kind of new currents of thoughts and culture; the ultimate end of reflection on the may4th is to get beyond it, which will rest upon solid academics to reconstruct the Chinese culture.Yu yingshi argues that Chen yinke's "independence of thoughts and freedom of spirits" is in one way based on his rich knowledge about Confucianism as well as the transformation in the modern world. Qian mu holds that historical facts and essence of Chinese history should be derived from the searching of the history. Yu yingshi seems to be sure about the Confucian orthodoxy and the theory of implementing, which takes the air of "benign pride". The Confucian orthodoxy of a one-way linage pattern is easy to get stuck,Yu yingshi holds that the dilemma of the modern Confucians lies in the critics from within and outside. The outside critics stem from the breaking up of an institutionalized Confucianism, yet Confucianism is not institutionalized religion, thus depriving it from its origin; the inside critics comes from the self-reconciliation within the Confucianism since the ming and qing dynasties. In one hand, the traditional Confucianism holds that one should cultivate his moral character and put one's family affairs in order and other civil society, the things of the private sectors. On the other hand, the human ethical daily life of the Confucianism is in accordance with the secularization ever since the religious reform in the western world.Yu yingshi's mild and reasonable views on the modern culture are based on the reflection outside the approaches to re-construction of Chinese modern culture, especially the liberalism and neo-Confucianism.It's ultimate purpose is to reflect on the traditional and reconstruction of Chinese culture.
