Newspaper is an important way for people to get information in their daily life. Metaphor, as a figure of speech, is widely used in newspaper English. In broad sense, metaphor means people use the words of one thing to refer to the other owing to some similarity of these two things, while in narrow sense, metaphor refers to one of the figures of speech. As a cognitive approach, the nature of metaphor is understanding one thing in terms of another. So as a cognitive approach, metaphor helps the author express his ideas vividly and helps the readers understand the author more easily. This paper first briefly introduces the research on metaphor from the points of traditional linguistics and modern linguistics. Then it lists the subtypes of metaphor-----conceit, personification, metonymy and synecdoche. By making use of the examples from the author's own translation practice, this paper tries to research on the translation of metaphor in English newspapers, and then puts forward some translating strategies as Literal Translation, Liberal Translation and Amplification in Translating. The last part draws a conclusion that knowing the cognitive function of metaphor can help the translator improve his ability of understanding the source text and his expressing in the target text. In the process of its Chinese translation of English newspapers, the translator can combine the cognitive knowledge with various translating strategies so that he can improve the quality of his translation.
