| After World War II, the cold war for scrambling hegemony took place between the United States and Soviet Union, which further influences the political pattern in eastern Asia. At that time, Japan was solely controlled by America and looked as the base for preventing the Communist Party. For Japan itself, Japanese Yoshida government made its policy for the country that they should pay great attention to economy rather than military in order to rebuild a commercial country under the rule of the United States. In the year 1949, the foundation of People's Republic of China made the affairs of eastern Asia the world's focus again. On 14th February 1950, Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance and Mutual Assistance came into force indicating that China became a member of the socialism union with Soviet as the leader. In October 1950, America was forced to take a strong attitude toward China and change its economy-preventing policy into an economy-supporting one forJapan because of Chinese intervention in the Korean War. From then on, besides the Cold War, the Warm War appeared in eastern Asia. The prime minister of Japan, Yoshida Shigeru, made suitable responses for the greatest benefits of his country through contacting with China, America, British, Soviet Union, and Taiwan. After the concession of America and Taiwan, the treaty of San Francisco was signed between America and Japan on 4th September 1951 denying the legal international status of China. On 28th April 1952, the relationship between Japan and Taiwan was normalized when the treaty of the two places was signed, which then resulted in the rupture of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. Japan has a small territory and is lack of natural resources. From about 1870s to 1880s, Japan began to covet China, light up the aggressive war, and snatch the energy resources and materials to support its economic development. With diplomatic relations breaking off, the normal commercial trade between China and Japan ceased, which brought a big hindrance to the economic development of Japan. Therefore, people from economic circles in Japan established a nongovernmental organization to continue the business trade with China. Although Chinese leaders were opposed to the saying that economies and politics are separated, they finally made a strategic decision to promote official relations by doing folk trade with Japan. On one hand, the decision can promote the development of commercial trade between China and Japan. On the other hand, it can maintain associations between them and provide necessary preparations for the further official relationships. My dissertation mainly focuses on analyses and discussions on the event that Japanese Yoshida government made use of the benefit-competing situation among America, Soviet Union, China, Taiwan, and even British in eastern Asia to gain the most benefits for Japan leading to the fracture of the diplomatic relations between China and Japan. There are three major reasons for appearance of the special folk diplomacy namely block of the official associations, requirements of economic development, and considerations of future international relations. Detailed discussions on why folk diplomacy appeared are the important points in my dissertation including the reasons for interrupt of the official associations and the necessities of folk diplomacy. |
