Foreign music history is a compulsory course in musical education courses. It covers almost all musical theories in other music courses, which has a close relationship with each other. It connects, support and guide other courses. As long as you are a music researcher, you must learn foreign music history, no matter what your education level is. Courses like piano, vocal, harmony, solfeggio and ear training, art introduction, improvised accompaniment, musical theory, instrument, dancing, etc. have a close relationship with foreign music history. Therefore, as a music learner or researcher, foreign music history study is a must, it plays a pivotal role in an indispensable position. With China's reforming and opening up policy, the merger of many foreign musical teaching modes and systems have brought an unprecedented development of musical education in our country. But many teachers and researchers often overlook the role and status of foreign music history, and do not connect it to teaching practice. Nowadays we focus more on the improvement of traditional teaching methods, the drafting and integration of teaching books, the adjustment and innovation in teaching and the highlight of teaching practice, etc, but most educators are targeting at musical education itself which is more suitable for professional schools but ignores the needs for this course from vocational schools, resulting in serious deviating in teaching materials, facilities, content and actual practice in these schools. This has greatly affected the improvement of musical education in vocational schools. According to current experience of teaching practice, the teaching of foreign music in vocational schools reflects that theoretical courses could not serve practical teaching in some aspect, far from the target of cultivating talents. I feel sad about this as a full-time teacher of foreign music history in vocational school. The problems come not only from students, such as low starting point and poor theoretical knowledge, but also from factors such as the over-professional teaching materials, courses that are far from vocational teaching fact and teaching goals that are too theoretical. Therefore the reform in foreign music history teaching is imperative. In this way, more musical talents will be cultivated. This paper, by years of teaching experience and relevant literature, finds out several problems in foreign music history teaching in vocational schools, such as disconnection between musical education and foreign music history, course arrangement of foreign music history, content of foreign music history materials, foreign music history and actual practice, etc. This paper cannot fully cover, describe and solve these problems, but I would like to draw the attention of music educators of the importance of this course to better develop vocational music teaching.
