Ideological Manipulation On English-Chinese News Translation Of RMB Revaluation From The Perspective Of Critical Discourse Analysis

Enlightened by Jeremy Munday's article"Systems in Translation—A Systemic Model for Descriptive Translation Studies"and through literature retrieval and analysis of the previous studies relevant to ideological manipulation, critical discourse analysis (CDA) and news translation both at home and abroad in recent years, the author attempts to apply critical discourse analysis with systemic functional grammar as its tool of specific language analysis to revealing ideological manipulation over English-Chinese news translation, targeting the reports on RMB revaluation selected from two internationally influential newspapers and their translations published in Cankao Xiaoxi.Different from many other studies on CDA and news translation emphasizing reveal of ideological manipulation over selection of translation texts and strategies, the present study adopts transitivity from systemic functional grammar as its tool for specific language analysis to unveil ideological manipulation on linguistic structure of the texts in the translation process.The data are collected from three newspapers, Cankao Xiaoxi, Wall Street Journal and The Guardian, which are all socio-politically influential both domestically and internationally. The study first carries out an analysis of socio-political contexts of the reports, and then conducts an analysis using transitivity as the analytical tool on the sentences selected from the above report texts. This analysis in terms of transitivity is based on clause level to show the shifts of processes in the translation process. In addition, the thesis makes a contrastive analysis combining the analysis of socio-political context and linguistic structures to demonstrate how ideological manipulation is realized through selection of different linguistic forms. We conclude that in the translation process, ideological manipulation is realized not only by the shifts of process types, the participants involved in the process, what role the participants play, but also by addition or deletion of certain process types.
