| English textbooks, as the main tools and main media for students to learn English provide the language learning resources and quantities of language inputs for students and also provide the strong supports for teachers' language teaching. The qualities of textbooks play vital roles in language teaching. The ability of analyzing and evaluating the textbooks is one of the fundamental abilities of teachers. At present, most researchers only focus on the analysis and evaluation of the textbooks from the standpoint of the theoretical perspective. The practical study mainly concentrates on the analysis and evaluation of textbooks for middle schools.This thesis makes a study of analysis and evaluation of New Horizon English Course from the perspective of topic content, which is a set of textbook for the students in higher vocational college. The study begins with the textual analysis, after which is an investigation. The investigation aims at perceiving the students'and teachers'opinions on the topic content in New Horizon English Course through questionnaire survey and interview survey. The subjects of the study are the students and teachers in a Teachers' College. On the basis of study and investigation, the thesis tries to give some suggestions to the editors and teachers.This thesis includes six parts in all.The background, significance, purposes, and research methods of the study have been dealt with in the introduction part.The first chapter summarizes the research on the analysis and evaluation of English teaching materials and the study on the topic content in the textbook at home and abroad.The second chapter focuses on the theoretical analysis from the viewpoints of curriculum, language, and language learning. Different types of language teaching syllabus are also introduced in this part.Textual analysis is the focus of chapter three. This part begins with the introduction of this set of textbook and all the topics in the textbook. The analysis is carrying on from the points of teaching syllabus for higher vocational college's English and Liu Daoyi's "ten properties" criteria. Chapter four focuses on the investigation. This part tries to summarize the students' and teachers' view about the topic content in this set of textbook through the questionnaire survey and interview survey.Chapter five presents the conclusion and puts forward some suggestions to the editors and teachers on how to compile the textbook and how to use the textbook. |
