In 2000,the Ministry of Education promulgated the basic requirements for English teaching in higher vocational education,and a large number of second generation English teaching materials appeared.However,in the face of a large number of different teaching materials,distinguishing their advantages and disadvantages is uncertain,to choose a suitable set of teaching materials,teaching students per their aptitude,is a definite challenge.Therefore,the teaching materials should be analyzed and evaluated scientifically and systematically.Teaching materials are the main source of knowledge input,and teachers organize classroom teaching based on the content of textbooks.Teaching materials play an irreplaceable role in classroom teaching.With the development of China’s economy and society and the increasing demand for high-quality vocational talents,English teaching in higher vocational colleges has been paid more and more attention.Based on the current situation of English education in Higher Vocational Colleges and Cheng Xiaotang’s textbook evaluation theory,this thesis makes an internal and external evaluation on the two sets of teaching materials,taking "Practical College English in the 21 st Century1" and "New Vocational English 1" as examples.Among them,the internal evaluation(or secondary research)is analyzed and compared with aspects of modern textbook composition theory,compiling form,language skills and language knowledge.Through comparison,the author found that these two textbooks are closely dependent on the new requirements in compiling principles,reflecting the practicality and professionalism of higher vocational education.The difficulty in developing language proficiency is in line with the actual situation of higher vocational students,and although the writing forms are different,they all embody the student-centered classroom concept.The external evaluation concludes by filling in the questionnaire after teachers and students use the teaching materials,which makes the analysis more comprehensive and effective.By collecting and analyzing the feedback from students and teachers,we can see that both students and teachers are satisfied with the use and results of the teaching materials.Each of the two textbooks has its own merits.If they can influence each other,there may be better learning outcomes.Finally,through a comprehensive analysis,this thesis puts forward some suggestions and general standards for the compilation of Higher Vocational English textbooks.That is,whether it is in line with the ability level of higher vocational students;whether it takes the new requirements as the compiling principle;whether it can better meet the professionalism,practicality and practicality of Higher Vocational English teaching.
