Music education in China has been developing very rapidly since the 1980s, during which time, advanced foreign pedagogies have been brought in. However, little attention has been paid to the music education and research with Chinese characteristics, especially that of localization of children's music education. And there has been little research achievement in the pertinent research of music skills and non-music skills of preschool-age children. In reaction to the above phenomenon, methods of qualitative study are adopted with Professor Zeming Chen as a research subject, whose education research of children's music has its characteristics in its localization. According to the lectures and the teacher trainings on the children's music education conducted by Professor Chen in Beijing, Shanghai and Taiyuan, the author gives the summary of Professor Chen's research characteristics of children's music education, combining Chen's related data with some famous foreign music education theories including multiple intelligences theories and sensory integration theories. First, systematical research has been made on the teaching textbooks, with music for teaching included, abided by the laws of children's body and mind development. Second, music is created based on the Chinese folk music and culture. Third, with creative educational ideas and relevant teaching methods, develop children's music and non-music skills in listening, language, emotional self-control, memory, concentration, response, imaginal thinking, logical thinking, communication, coordination, and so on. Fourth, the flexible teaching methods of the eight modules in Chen's educational system for children's music education makes it possible for preschool teachers to carry out teaching selectively in modules. And fifth, Chen's educational system in children's music education, with its easy access to understanding and emulation, is effective in practice and good for popularization among kindergartens, parent-child institutions and normal schools for kindergarten teachers.This article, starting with Chen's learning experiences, gives a brief introduction of the formation and development of Chen's children's music education and fully details the four aspects of the educational targets for children's music education, teaching materials, music made for teaching and teaching methods, with vivid and detailed case studies. The last paragraph focuses on the realistic significance of Chen's music education research for children by means of the discussion on the ideas and assessment of Chen's music education for children. His teaching methods for children's music education, with advanced ideas and creativity, provide some guidance to both preschool education institutions and children's music educators.
