The Nanjing Street Names Language And Cultural Analysis

Street names are often the most direct record of the city changes. It has its own special law of production and change. It records and witness the city's natural environment,historical events, customs,celebrity stories and anecdotes. Street names are proper nouns.As a part of the vocabulary,it has meaning, pronunciation and character shape,just like other words.Based on the statistical analysis of collected street names of Nanjing, I'll make an investigation on the street names' characteristics, evolution and the relationship with Nanjing's regional culture from the linguistic perspective.This article is divided into four parts. The first chapter made a careful study on the generic name of Nanjing street.Then it analysed the historical evolution of these generic term and their current usage situation.It descriped several high-frequenctly used generic terms in detail. The second chapter made a research from the perspective of linguistics.It found the features in phonetics, vocabulary, grammar. Through statistical analysis, the special regional culture in Nanjing will be found in the third chapter. The fourth chapter compared old street names with new street names to find it's changing process and situation from the historical perspective.
